The Japanese planed their movement thoroughly. They capitalized on the weaknesses of the British, and seized British ammunition supplies and military maps.
The british underestimated the Japanese. They believed that the jungles of Malaya formed a natural barrier and that the Japanese would have difficulty moving through jungles. The wrongly believed Singapore was an impregnable fortress. They thought they were adequately prepared as they had set up their naval base at the northern part of Singapore facing Johor Straits, established military airfields in Tengah and Sembawang, placed guns in positions they believed would defend Singapore and built underground bunkers in Labrador, Fort canning and Sembawang.

Japanese had a large and modern fleet of battleships which are supported by modern fighter planes such as the 'Zero' fighter planes.
The british did not have a large strong fleet of warships. The only sent the ships Prince of whales and Repulse which were bombed by the Japanese. The air bases were not equipped with fighter planes. The plane used were old and outdated that have no match for the Japanese planes.

The british leader Percival was neither decisive nor forceful.

The Japanese troops are trained in jungle warfare and are loyal and committed to their Emperor and country and is willing to fight for Japan.
The british troops were not trained in jungle warfare and were disorganized.

The british did not use tanks as they believed that tanks were unsuitable for jungle warfare and there for did not prepare any tank for warfare.

Japanese had goals - conquer countries in Southeast Asia for raw materials. To be master of Asia and the Pacific region.
British were fighting war in Europe and North Africa which they considered more important to them than Asia and Pacific region and could not spare warplanes and and battleships to fight against the Japanese.
